Sun protection is not a seasonal problem here
In most of the world a windshield sunshade is a summer accessory. In the UAE it is closer to a year-round habit. Cars spend long stretches parked outdoors — office towers, mall rooftops, villa driveways, sandy patches of overflow parking — often with the windshield pointed straight at the sun for hours at a time.
Glass is very good at letting sunlight in and much worse at letting the resulting heat back out. That energy lands on the dashboard, the steering wheel, the seats and the trim, and those surfaces are what you actually touch when you get back in. A shade sitting between the glass and the cabin intercepts a share of that direct sunlight before it reaches them. It is a simple, mechanical idea, and it is the reason sunshades have existed largely unchanged for decades.
What a sunshade does not do is turn a parked car into a cool car. Air still heats up, the body panels still absorb sun, and ventilation still matters. What separates a good car sunshade from a bad one
Coverage
A shade only protects the glass it actually covers. Gaps at the top corners, a strip of uncovered glass along the dashboard, or a panel that sits low and leaves the upper windshield exposed all let direct sun straight through. Full-width, edge-to-edge coverage is the single most useful property a windshield sunshade has.
Fit
Windshields are not flat and they are not the same shape from car to car. Rake angle, curvature and width vary enormously between a compact sedan, a large SUV and a low sports coupé. A shade that fits properly holds its position against the glass without constant re-wedging behind the sun visors. A shade that does not fit slides, buckles and eventually gets left in the boot. Construction
Materials matter less for marketing reasons and more for boring ones: how the layers are bonded, whether the edges are finished or raw, whether the panel holds its shape after hundreds of folds, and how the surface behaves after months of heat exposure. Cheap shades tend to fail at the seams and creases long before the panel itself gives up.
Usability
You will handle a sunshade twice per trip, every trip. If it takes two hands, a knee and a minute to fold, you will stop using it. Fast to deploy, fast to fold, obvious which way is up — that is the whole brief.
Storage
A shade lives in the car, so it has to store politely. A folded panel that rolls around the footwell or blocks the rear-view mirror is a small daily annoyance. Something that packs down and stays put is not a luxury feature; it is the difference between using the thing and not.
Durability
Heat, dust and repeated folding are hard on any product. The realistic test of a sunshade is not day one, it is month eighteen: does it still sit flat, still hold its shape, still look like something you chose rather than something you settled for?
Appearance
This is the part the category ignored. You can spend a year choosing a car and then park it with a crinkled silver rectangle in the windshield. It is the most visible surface of a parked car and, for most of the last few decades, the least considered.
Where WHEELERIE fits
We did not invent the sunshade. We got bored of looking at it. WHEELERIE is a design-led brand: we treat the windshield as a surface worth designing, the same way you would treat a print, a poster or a plate. Each shade is an original design rather than a licensed graphic dropped onto generic stock — our first design, Tessie, dates back to 2022 and was never launched until now.
The functional brief stays unglamorous and deliberately unexaggerated: cover the glass, fit the car, fold without a fight, survive a UAE summer, and look like something you picked on purpose. We would rather under-promise on specifications and be specific about what we have actually tested than publish numbers we cannot stand behind.
Sunshade, tint, or both
Window film and a windshield shade are usually presented as competing purchases. They are not: tint belongs on the side and rear glass and is regulated, while the windshield is the surface you are least free to darken permanently — which is precisely why a removable panel exists for it.
